The Z1 in HDV mode is far better than a whole bag full of commentators
who have never used one to make actual programmes with but who recite
hypothetical specifications in order to prove that Sony got it wrong.
If you are going to shoot HDV though you had better have a joined up and
coherent plan for what your going to do with it next. Currently the
choices are pretty limited, unless you're happy to use any one of a
number of bad solutions that have been offered to the unwary by mere
pretenders. Native HDV is a second best post production path but right
now the Canopus HQ codec still provides the most elegant and high
quality option, by a significant margin.
All this blather about low light is pretty irrelevant unless you need to
shoot in the dark. The Z1's lux three rating at 0dB is mitigated by
noise free gain up to 12db.
Haven't tested the Canon HD1 yet but the JVC-HD101 has to be the most
over hyped pile of mush that the easily propagandised have been sold to
for a long time. Looks like a repeat of the PD150 v DV500 all over
again. Just because a camera looks like the antediluvian concept of a
broadcast camera, is shoulder mounted and has a detachable lens, doesn't
necessarily make it better. The PD150 produced significantly better
quality pictures than the DV500 and now the Z1 is demonstrating the same
sort of margin of superiority over the HD101. Further more, why on earth
would anyone want to paint themselves into a corner by investing in a
camera that only shoots HDV in 720p mode? 720p is lousy for TV work and
doesn't convert nicely to interlaced. On the other hand 1080i can be
losslessly converted to anything including de-interlaced modes.
Etc.,etc.
