Here's my bias and background : I work as a freelance video engineer on
production trucks. I started with single-camera events many years ago, and
own my own small truck that's suitable for HS games, but not for college or
network-level stuff. (pics and gear list at www.videoworksinc.com)

You don't say what production level you're aiming for, but I think you'll
get lots of answers in this group for the single camera approach. As a
reference, here's
how the big boys do it :

For Basketball, you'll want 2 hard cameras up high. One wide, one tight.
The tight one will need a 40X or more lens. 55X seems to be the most common
right now for college level games. You'll also want at least 2 handheld
cameras courtside with 18X or so lenses. If you want to make your poor ol'
engineer smile, then add 2 more hh cameras just to cover the coaches. These
will all need to be under CCU control. Of course, you'll also want a couple
of POV cameras covering the game and shot clocks. These can be hi-8 cameras
with bad transports from your junk pile. These are usually just run through
a frame sync and then cropped and positioned in the switcher. Football has
different needs, so the positioning and lens requirements are different.

But camera position is just the tip of the iceberg. You didn't even ask
about audio, IFB, network coordination, or graphics, any of which can be as
challenging as making the video look purty.
