Then I pity American citizens. I have two DVD players with component
output that give an *excellent* quality picture and also play back MPEG4
files. One cost £20, and the other is a DVD recorder with built-in
160GB harddrive that cost £150.

Might I suggest you have been conned by swift salesmen into spending
more than you needed to, and perhaps have a few things to learn about
what actually goes in to the products you buy?
