Yeah, those little A/B switchers do not have frame synchronizers and
don't cut between the vertical interval part of the signal; you'll
never get anything useable that way. The used products you mention
will do the job, more or less. The cheap ones will show a slight freeze
or pause between fades and dissolves, but the cuts should look all
right for th emost part. The panasonic units were very popular, and you
might have better luck getting spare parts and service on those. Just
keep your expectations low. If you could find a rich sugar daddy for
the school, a newtek Tricaster would be perfect for you. But that's out
of your budget.
If you have access to a mac laptop, check out channel storm's Live
Channel. Uses firewire for inputs, brings in graphic supers and etc.
and switches multiple cameras. All in software. The non-firewire camera
would have to go into something like an ADVC-100 to turn it into a DV
firewire source. Those are about $300, the same as buying another Dv
camcorder. On the bright side, the ADVC-100 will let you do analog in
and out to VHS decks and DVD players or recorders. Don't forget, macs
and mac software can be had for half price using academic discounts
from Apple.
