Well.......... Mr Kanuk
Without really knowing too much, I'm guessing that you haven't shot too many
recitals....
and this is not a meant to be a jab, ---- I've shot just about everything in
the last 20 years -- and
yet only done a handful of these jobs myself
Recitals stress me out more than Live Television, because in order to do a
good job you have to be on the ball,
you have to be constantly zooming in and out ---smoothly--- and racking that
focus and tilting and panning like a mofo ---- did I say --Smoothly---If
you're going with one camera that is. You have to get in there and get good
shots of each little brat ---so their parents can not feel cheated for that
$29.99 or whatever...
Then of course --- there's the sound: Gambling that the house PA will sound
good enough through your onboard microphone WILL NOT CUT IT
usually---because bored, distracted kids may be in charge of that
so you'll need some quality microphones and audio adaptors... and the skill
to know how to set and keep good levels
So --- the MAIN issue is: Can you do a GOOD job? There are too many people
out there who CAN'T ---
who still manage to get paid too much in my opinion.
Be WORTH what you charge.
I've been known to do a recital for $500 for a basic but GOOD 3 hr shooting
job --- mostly in-camera editing
with my DSR-300A. Then $250 for a quick tightening job Edit, with basic
titles, sound tweaks and then
a settop DVD burn and $10 per DVD which I insist come only from ME. I also
insist that there be NO CAMERAS THERE BUT MINE and whatever local TV camera
sent to spray the event for News 12 or whatever..... and that's it. I use
industrial grade sennheiser wireless mics, a pretty good Vinton Pro tripod
and many years of experience with exposure and framing --- so my clients are
getting a STEAL ---- no doubt about it
If you charge $500 and do a hatchet job with a handicam Hi-8 or $300.00 mini
DV on a velbon plastic kmart set of sticks--- well there's a special place
in hell for you ---next to the guys who go 60 in the left hand lane!
