Replace, I think. There are quite a few good quality players out there,
and it's not worth trying to hang-on for HD-DVD/BluRay. I guy I work
with just bought a new Pioneer (sorry, can't recall the number) and the
dealer had made it multi-region using a remote. That's a better bet than
having a player chipped, because you haven't invalidated the machine's
warranty.
