Try telling that to my girlfriend.

Or those whose partners CAN'T TELL when the aspect ratio is wrong.
When my girlfriend first moved in here all we had was my AV gear, based
around a cable box, TiVo and DVD player running component video through
an amplifier to a plasma display.
Not only did the setup confuse the hell out of her ("You have to choose
what to watch on the AMPLIFIER?!?") but she never, ever got the ratio
right. Widescreen stuff in Panoramic, 4:3 material in widescreen. It
didn't bother her in the slightest but it used to wind me up every time
I walked into the room. And she maintained that she honestly couldn't
see the difference even after I changed it to the correct ratio.
Now she has her own STB, VCR and DVD hooked up through the plasma's
SCART with auto switching. The picture quality has taken a slight hit
but at least everyone on the screen is the correct shape now. But, more
importantly, harmony has been restored since I now have no reason to
moan whenever I enter the room (unless she's watching yet another bloody
Charmed rerun).
