We have a range of different MiniDV decks here from a range of manufactures
to cope with the fact that it's fairly common to have one MiniDV tape that
won't play back in a particular deck. No logic or pattern to it ever so a
range are needed to cope with the differences. This indicates a range of
tolerance that is not handled by every deck.
DVCAM is much less problematic but MiniDV can be a problem.
As I said for the monies you pay for a MiniDV camcorder I have no illusion
on the accuracy of the tape path alignment.
I charge more to do a tape path align on some decks that a cheap MiniDV
camcorder costs new!
And for domestic users that is more than adequate. but for a post house like
us dealing with all those different MiniDV source cameras is only manageable
by having like 6 or more different types of MiniDV deck at hand.
