Columbia (well, Sony Pictures now) releases used to have RCE, but it was
never really applied to that many titles. There's an outside chance that the
title you want will have RCE, but if you use the instructions I posted to
set the player to region one you'll have no playback issues. After you've
set it to region one you should never have to touch it again, as RCE wasn't
implemented in other regions. Don't worry, it will still play region two
(and other region) discs and the like without you having to change it every
time, as it's an automatic mod with a manual backup.
Setting the player to region one is to do with the way the RCE code attempts
to discover if the machine is multi-region. When a normal DVD first loads
the code asks the player which region it is. If it's coded for region one
it'll ask the player if it's also region one. A multi-region player will
respond 'yes' and the disc will play. RCE tried to be clever by first asking
if the player is region one, then asking if it was another region as well.
If it got two 'yes' answers, it would know it was a multi-region machine and
wouldn't play the disc.
BTW, you have the exact same mod as my old DV-444. The newer Pioneer mods
are completely transparent, in that they will play RCE titles without any
user intervention (not that there are that many RCE titles). There's a list
