That is the supposed rationale behind it, yes. But if you truly intend on
getting an HD player in the future, you can still rent a standard DVD now
and then buy an HD edition when you have the player. I really doubt that
the majority of consumers out there are going to rush to buy more-expensive
hybrids now. Most will stay with standard DVDs and then purchase HD movies
later on in whatever format they opt for. The real losers are those with
HD-DVD players now, who are being forced to pay higher prices for a standard
DVD version that they have no use for. That seems to be fostering a lot of
resentment, and that does not help the HD-DVD format.
