Somebody - earlier in this thread - stated that "standard definition"
is "dead."
That's not true.
The DTV (digital TV) broadcast standard, in the U.S., includes the
following formats:

Standard definition will be one of the 18 digital TV formats broadcast
in the U.S.
Bandwidth restrictions will mean that many stations will "multicast."
That means they will have to continue using standard definition IN
ADDITION TO high definition as a means of saving bandwidth...
especially when broadcasting on multiple digital channels at the same
time.
In my opinion, the "big improvement" to date has already happened.
We've pretty much made the transition from ANALOG to DIGITAL.
That's the major improvement.
Buy a standard definition CRT television with an integrated ATSC
receiver and you will see an incredible difference when compared to the
pictures that you will receive using an older NTSC tuner.
Even standard definition DIGITAL channels are an incredible improvement
over standard definition ANALOG broadcast channels.
While high definition is great, it isn't the only DIGITAL format that
will continue to be a big part of the future of digital TV.
