DVD specs allow for bad spots and the player will skip over them. If
it can't pick up where it left off then an error is issued.

Crappy media. The problem is getting worse now that the price wars
have begun. There is only one solution - get Taiyo Yuden (TY) discs,
the overwhelming choice of CDFreaks.
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=146146.
Rima.com and SuperMediaStore.com have them at a very inexpensive cost.
FujiFilm rebrands TY but you must get the Made In Japan version, NOT
Taiwan. Best Buy has 8x +Rs MIJ for $35 per 100. Burn 8x discs at 8x
and 16x discs at 12x.

Look at the Quality scans of those FujiFilm TYs on CDFreaks:

If you have a good drive, then it is the media.
It used to be that you could match certain media to the drive, but now
all the media except TY is becoming so crappy it won't match with
drives as easily as before.
The last of the good discs other than TY, namely Verbatim made by
Mitsubishi Chemical Corp (MCC), has succumbed to poor quality. The
only one left you can depend on is TY. There is one additional benefit
to TY - they match up well with almost any good drive. There is no
excuse not to use anything but TY discs.
