You'll be much happier if you go to Best Buy and purchase a Panasonic
DMR-ES20S for about $180 to $200. I have one, and my only gripe is it
can't seem to record cable above channel 100 or so. (I'd like to
record channel 241, but haven't quite yet figured out how to...)
I've had very, very bad luck buying cheap electronics from Wal-Mart
(Durabrand).

Use DVD-RWs. They're erasable. Note there's a difference between
DVD+RW and DVD-RW.

If that's the main reason you want one, you'd actually be better off
with just a CD burner (yes, a CD burner; record to CD-R or CD-RW) and
make a Video-CD slideshow. I've done one with about 600 pictures on a
VCD, and still have room to spare (!!) VCDs have good compatibility
with most DVD players.
If you only have a CD drive (not a burner), might as well get a DVD
burner. Try www.pricewatch.com and look for a brand-name DVD burner.
They're around $40.
Keep in mind, if you do, you can't record TV to the computer without a
TV capture card. Those cost around $100+. For that price, might as
well get a stand-alone DVD recorder.
Good luck!
