Whoops, I didn't read your question thoroughly enough. For backups, a
DVD burner (not a DVD recorder) would be better.. can store over 4 gb
on a DVD-RW. You might have trouble taking the DVD-RW disk to Costco
for developing the pictures, though. Might need to stick to CD-RW for
that task - can record up to 700 mb on a rewritable CD-RW disk. You
can record CD-RWs using a DVD burner. (There is no equivalent CD+RW,
just only CD-RW and CD-R. Yay!)

For simple viewing on the TV (for family gatherings) the VCD slideshow
is great.
