I can't answer your specific question about the artifact lines, but about
your
proposed "fixes", another option would be to borrow or purchase used
one of the Sony Digital8 cams, as most would play reg8, HI-8 or DV8
tapes without questions by internally sensing the format and making the
necessary conversions. Of course, the output again is via a firewire, S-VHS
or composite , your choice. This would eliminate one extra step in
the process, adding to your quality.
