A DVD player with a HDMI output will probably have the ability to
upscale a DVD from 576 (480) lines to either 720 or 1080 lines of data,
but this extra data is bogus and is extrapolated from the original
material, so it can't really look any better.
A HD-DVD or Blu-ray player is a completely new format that has masses of
extra picture data on the disc, so there is no need for mock upscaling,
it just shows you a picture with more than twice the detail of DVD.
