By "HD Player" I assume you mean "HD-DVD" and/or "Blu-Ray"... These are like
next generation dvd players -with higher-density discs, showing movies, etc.
at higher-than-dvd quality.
They are a totally different format, requiring different discs (although
there is talk of 3-in-1 discs coming that will be able to play on any
dvd/hi-def dvd player.)
HDMI is the type of (digital) connection at the back of certain players. You
need a hdmi slot in the back of your tv/projector/monitor to be able to use
it (although you could connect it without using that port, but not benefit
from the improvements).
This gives you the best possible picture you are gonna get from your
'standard' dvds -well assuming your screen can take&display the upscaled
image, which it should be able to do if it has a hdmi port anyway.
