In answer to P Pron & Colin Wilson as well:
Even if the ISP was giving a dead connection then I should be seeing some
flickering of the various indicators surely? I get zilch.
I tried to use the original modem that came with the Tiscali start-up pack
on a hardwire but there was driver problem (don't ask me why) and the modem
would not install correctly. The PC is mainly used by the kids and they
install all sorts of shite - it could really do with a complete wipe and
re-install.
Tried different filters and the phone line is shared with the home phone so
not a wiring problem
Looks like it is going to be a new modem then
