I've been working with a production company in Tokyo who say that many of
their commercial clients are now asking specifically for the Z1. You can
shoot either SD PAL or NTSC with the Z1 as well as HDV, no down-conversion
necessary. The only real issue I know of with the camera is mediocre
low-light sensitivity. Operationally, though, I hate the electronic focus
ring and aperture wheel...
I was looking into these cams and was also interested in the JVC,
specifically because it has a "real" lens that allows for decent manual
focusing and aperture. I asked a few folks who have used them and was told
that the standard Fujinon lens was quite poor and the cameras are not very
durable.
I don't know if this is true, but you should find out before spending that
kind of money. I do perfer the design of the JVCs to the Z1.
