Using Dolby 6.1 Receiver with DVD player

Posted by Ken on 12/05/06 16:45

I am not sure this is the correct place for my questions and they may
require more information, but perhaps someone can clarify my confusion:

I have a Receiver that is capable of Dolby 6.1, and it has a multitude
of inputs and outputs. I also have a cheap DVD/VCR player unit that I
use for playing CD's as well as DVD's and VCR tapes. Currently I use
the coax output of the DVD player to input into the receiver. My
thinking is that the DVD unit will send the data to the receiver and the
appropriate decoder will separate the channels correctly based upon what
is written on the disk.

Am I correct on this assumption??

Does it do the same for both CD's and DVD's?

Is there some characteristic of the DVD player that would limit what the
receiver can do or is it simply all digital and the receiver will
interpret the information appropriately?

Do you need to know more about the player?

I realize that these are probably very simple questions for those well
versed in such equipment, but although there is much written about how
to hook up the equipment, it did not seem to explain how it worked. Thanks.
