Egg crates, or the sonex or markerfoam pyramidal foam pads they stand
in for, do not soundproof a room, they only retard reverberation or
'slap-back', but even simple cheap movers blankets can do that. In our
radio days we used coarkboard tiles and tons of posters to soak up
sound.
I think I would have painted at least half those cartons before
putting them up so you could get a nice checkerboard pattern going like
at the old Chess Studio in Chicago. As it is, that picture looks like
my kid went nuts with a glue gun and his school art project.:-P
If you are looking to soundproof or at least deaden a room really
cheaply, a better strategy might be to put heavy hooks in along the
ceiling into wall studs, then hang shag rugs floor to ceiling with a
1-inch air gap beween the backs of the rugs and the walls. You could
then find some nice mandala patterns on a rug to hang in front of you.
You would still get transmissive sound coming thru the floor and
ceiling, but this would be an inexpensive and easily removeable method
to get a way quieter room and less bleed of sound out to the rest of
the house.
