If in the future anyone stumbles upon this post, the crux of
the difficulty seems to be the recorder's insistence on assigning
L2 to the external decoder, while the actual line is L1.
This L1 is shared with the internal Freeview decoder, and
Input/Select is the way to switch between them.
The advice from Customer assistance has been to go through
the Basic Setup in Guide + and when asked for "Provider"
input "None", this leading to a list of proprietry names. I
was to scroll to the bottom and input "???". Then overnight
there would be a download which would accept the Samsung
2100 decoder.
Since It downloads to L1, it actually updated Freeview listings
and did little else, except "NTL" as a provider has only one input
now, instead of NTL Bromley and NTL somewhere else.
Nothing was changed for the better, still unable to use cable from
Guide +.
