I'll post slowly so that you may understand.
In 1985 people used terminal emulators or dumb consoles to access
systems that offered newsreading programs. Due to line speed and modem
limitations, text was displayed slowly. Rather than having to wait
for the entire post to be displayed, it was faster and easier to reply
and post at the top of the message.
Back then, posts could be read as they were displayed. They were
not downloaded first. Usenet articles were originally transported
between sites using UUCP (look it up) which usually used asnyc modems.
