The two camcorders are quite different. As you note, the Sony uses a format
which only is offered currently by Sony called AVCHD, which is considerably
less capable of providing HD quality than the Canon HV10, which is an HDV
format camcorder. Of the 2 camcorders, the Canon is unquestionably the one
to buy, especially if you have any desire to do AVCHD editing with the Sony.
There are very few software tools available for AVCHD, whereas HDV has been
out for over 2 years and software to do editing and HD authoring are very
widely available, supported and debugged.
You might also take note of the recently announced replacement for the HV10,
called the HV20, which has gotten some very good preliminary comments. Also
note that the Sony HDR-HC3, the Sony competitor to the Canon HV10, has also
been replaced, in this case with two new models, the HC5 and the HC7. The
discontinued HC3 is a really excellent HDV camcorder for the money (around
$1000 if you can find one) and the successors are likely to be even better.
