I compared the HV10 and HC3 very carefully, and I already own and use a much
more expensive Sony HDV camcorder, the FX1 with 3 CCDs and a great lens, so
I have an immediate basis for comparison. I've used the FX1 since it came
out almost 2 years ago, and thus have a lot of HDV footage to compare to.
Unquestionably, I would buy the HC3 over the HV10, and other comparisons
done in print and on the web seem to agree with this conclusion. However,
the HV20 appears to be a much better camcorder, and I have seen no reviews
yet for the new HC5 or HC7, so it is very hard to tell yet whether the
tables have turned. It is entirely possible that the HV20 is a much better
camera than either of the 2 new Sonys.
The now discontinued HC3 at a close out price would be a safe and very
satisfactory purchase IMHO. I frequently leave the FX1 at home and only take
the HC3, and did exactly that during a recent cruise in the Mexican Baja.
The HC3 results were superb, and the only disappointment was the slightly
poorer low light performance when directly compared to the FX1, which sold
for well over $3000 when I bought it. The consumer cameras like the HC3 and
HV Canons lack a lot of manual controls which I like to use, so it is
essentially a trade-off of weight and bulk for creative control of the
camera, and to a lesser extent of picture quality when going from a $3K
camera to a $1K. It is remarkable to me how well a $1K consumer HDV
camcorder performs in most situations.
I hope I have helped you but can't entirely answer your question. You would
benefit from doing some in-store comparisons at a place like BestBuy where
both models are likely to appear. I would forget the HV10 for sure, and see
if you can get your hands on an HC3 or a new HV20 to see how they compare.
The new HC5 and HC7 are due out in March I believe.
