Actually, it is, although it's more commonly referred to as "scope," and
the actual aspect ratio of such films shot today is 2.39:1. For scope
films, an anamporphic lense is used to vertically squeeze a 2.39:1 image
onto a 1.37:1 frame of film. When projected, it passes through another
anamorphic lense that stretches it horizontally back to the correct aspect
ratio.
"Anamorphic" for film shouldn't be confused with "anamorphic enhancement"
on DVDs, although both use the same principle of squeezing the image to use
more of the available image area.
