There are several 35mm film standards with varying aspect ratios. Some
are cropped down from 4:3 to 16:9 and in those cases there is more
information on the 4:3 version. The recent exposure of Jennifer
Aniston's breasts is an example of a 4:3 to 16:9 crop.
I prefer 16:9 simply because that is how the movie was meant to be
viewed.
Take a look at the Criterion edition of Lawrence of Arabia sometime.
It was shot in 70mm and in 16:9.
