It is going to be interesting to see whether XDCAM HD has much of a life
span and ever reach the lofty promises that Sony made about it. Even
XDCAM HD's disc based media might look quaint in 18 months. I'm sure
the Xpresscard memory sticks will become ubiquitous in that time span.

Memory cards and direct recording to HDDs seem to e the biggest threat
but if XDCAM HD is to continue will albeit an updated codec and increase
in bit-rate is always necessary.

I can't see too much requirement for greater than HD or 2k recording at
least for broadcast media so I would assume the next development to eat
into the bandwidth reserve will be enhanced colour resolution and depth
caused by much improved latitude from the camera front-end. So son of
XDCAM would need 100++ Mbps.

Who would be an owner operator at this time? Very costly if you back
the wrong horse...
