Bill Vermillion mentions the setup menus in a set-top DVD player.
Mine I would buy after first reviewing for broadest compatibility
between encoding specifications (APEX among others was a popular brand
then). What I recall happening would be my player would mis-
synchronize NTSC/PAL. I'd get garbage and wouldn't be able to see the
menu (I wrote the number of menu "clicks" to navigate without a
screen). Possibly unplug affected systems so they'll revert to native
setup ROM routines.

Yes, broadcast engineers no doubt did spend a fortune. I should
dedicate a well, a hole in ground filled with money, to a fortune I've
spent (an ongoing thing) since someone kindly taught me to build a
computer. Then, again, the more money realized in entertainment and
advanced computer graphics just drives down outrageous prices into
affordable, one-touch does it all, consumer-friendly products.

A friend also has occasional difficulty with encoding and a set-top
DVD player. A $60/US Phillips unit he recently bought on my
recommendation from Walmart. There's only so much information that'll
fit on the Decoder ROM routine, I explain as simply as I can, as it
can't be expected to handle every encoded curveball (googley? Brit.
equivalent in cricket) thrown at it.

Best of all, given ability, dispense with multi-region/standards
altogether and replace a DVD player with a computer. I use half-a-
dozen software decoders now -- haven't touched the slew of encoding
utilities in quite some time. A little care need be exercised over
37" LCD monitor/HD-televisions marketed now -- they aren't up to what
I'd consider being wholly free from defects, especially with lowend
brandnames rapidly approaching as low as $500/US. The flipside is,
with a suitable warranty and modest computer build, once sampled,
there's no turning back to DVD standalones (or soon to be extinct
CRTs).

I'm on my second Olevia 32" - a newer 232V model from a defective unit
the manufacturer replaced. The computer is a modest socket 478 Intel
Duron music/video build. The 232V has HDTV, absent from the earlier
other model, and first time I scanned local airwaves, I had over 40
channels instead of 5 or 6 marginal receptions prior. Didn't take
long to select only crystal clear HDTV choices. Indeed. I'd like
another large format LCD to replace a 19" LCD on my non-entertainment
computer -- maybe, after awhile to be sure the second replacement
doesn't break.
