I tend to agree with your statements based on comparing 720p to 1080i on my
tv (and I have a "very good eye"). I can set the cable box (which is
receiving live broadcasts) to 720p, and I see little difference and
definitely believe the 1080i is better (it should be anyway for slow
movements or still shots). But I think it is better even for live football
and do not notice any of the "flickering" that is associated with interlaced
viewing - I am sure the faster the movement the more you would notice it :-)
.. Plus the color is better in 1080i.
I am referring to live broadcasts that are sent in 1080i, so somehow when I
set the cable box to 720p it changes the picture color quality in addition
to the scan (actually I have no way of knowing if the scan is really
changing for live broadcasts even though it says 720p up in the upper right
corner - but you can certainly notice the change if you put it on 480i -
blurry, sidebars, etc). Maybe the tv grabs what it wants and is playing
1080i regardless of me changing the scan on the cable box to 720p, but I
doubt that (you have to go to a special white setup screen to do this and I
found out how to do this by accident - the default setting is 1080i). Do
you know what I am talking about. I asked the vice president of my cable
company who is an electronic engineer, and a nice guy, and smart bugger,
what was going on inside the box, and IIRC he said something to the effect
that the tv might take what it wants for the broadcasts - he may be wrong
about this. Granted it takes what it wants when a broadcast is in 480i
versus 1080i high def, but I think it truly changes the scans when you
change the settings in setup on the cable box.
So I guess my next question is - are live broadcasts (and changing them on
my cable box), different than changing them on a dvd player, pertaining to
the upscaling and downscaling stuff. I am sure you can't upconvert a 1080i
live broadcast to 1080p (is that true, or is there a piece of hardware that
can do that).
Sorry I went off on a tangent here. I hope you stayed awake - lol .
