You're trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

On 10/31/2007 a new requirement will be in place. After that the new
players will have to be able to do some things, like PIP, that they
don't do now.

BUT, the old players will still be able to play the movies, even the
ones with the new added 'features'. So unless you just dig those PIPed
running commentaries from the director about what he had for lunch and
such, it just doesn't matter... ;-)
