I am sticking with my two Oppos for the time being. The upconvert
with a standard DVD is excellant when the source is a high bit-rate
DVD-9, and very good even on the ones that I have experimented with
DvdShrink. And it significantly improves those that I have converted
over from VHS to 480i DVD.
If the upconvert of the HD, or Bluray player for that matter, is as
good as the Oppo or more expensive Denon, then it would not be a bad
investment at the two hundred dollar price. But if they make it too
good, then why would one want to spend money on the more expensive BR/
HD movies? I am highly suspect until more comparison information is
forthcoming.
Also, I am not able to see the difference between 1080p and 720p from
a viewing distance of three times the height of the monitor. It may
be just me, but I had read that elsewhere and that has been my
experience. I suspect that everything will be 1080p within the next
couple of years, but at 720p prices. I probably still won't see a big
reason to upgrade.
To date, the best setup that I have seen was a 50" 720p Fijitsu plasma
fed from a Denon upconvert player, about a $4000 setup. Awesome. My
Vizio with an Oppo 970 (about $1200) ain't too shabby though either.
Better to wait this one out, imho.
