I've not used the Panasonic. I've been pleased with my Oppo players.
Note that the Oppo 970 is being replaced by the 980. $20 more, additional
features.

Yes.

It's better than line-doubling but it's not magic. SD-DVD will never be HD,
but it can look better than you've seen it before.
