Close. I reached for it from too far away, it slipped and slid from a
stack of books into a glass of wine (full glass, mind you, so I can't
even blame the alcohol).
I pried it apart and cleaned everything with alcohol (the non-drinking
kind), but the ASIC was apparently fried.

Digital Video Recorder (i.e. stores digitized video). Technically,
any DVD recorder is also a DVR, but what I mean by DVR is what you
mean by Personal Video Recorder (though that could apply to a VCR as
well).
I see hard drive recorders all over UK and AU web sites, but none in
the US anymore. It's perplexing.

My Sony unit records to both a hard drive and DVD. It's exactly this
kind of unit which is no longer sold in the US anywhere I can find.
>As for the Tivo, can you not opt out of the fee based programme guide?
They refer to activation on their site, so I'm pretty sure the unit is
a doorstop without the monthly fee.
