Yes, and there are 32 and 64 bit versions of XP.

Yes. But you will need 64 bit device drivers. Some of those are still being
wished for.

The new features of Vista don't seem to have anything at all to do with
performance of the kind we cherish for video production.

Yes. For example Adobe Premiere Edition 3 needed a fairly massive update to
be reliable and functional under Vista 32, and is not recommended at all for
Vista 64.
