depending on your source you will most likely be capturing DV or HDV. Via
firewire.

Free Apps from MS or Apple.
Light versions of Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut, Sony vegas, Or that crap
from Avid.

FLV. Flash Video. Not Quicktime. Not Microsoft's WMV.

I get away with Flash at 640x360 or 480 maximum. Comfortable size is not an
absolute but 320 wide is a pretty sure fit.

Anytime you want to. You'll have to at some point. May as well start there.

I have a garbage can for it.
You will need a convertor to capture composite or component from that. There
are a number of them. Convert analog to firewire transmitted DV.
