Last year I TD'd an 8 camera HD shoot of a symphonic music event.
The director, who had considerable experience doing such shows, also
had at his side an assistant, who was a musician, with the scores for
the pieces being performed. During the rehearsals, as the director was
blocking his shots, the assistant marked up the scores. During the
actual live audience performance, he would cue the director a few
measures ahead, so the shots of the next instrument section or solo
would be ready. The rehearsal also lets the director and TD get "in
sync" with each other, so the TD will know whether to switch shots when
the director says "take THREE' or at "TAKE three," or by a finger point
or a snap. And invariably, "ready three, take TWO."
