How much of that stuff was done that way because there was no other option?
Technology advances and gets embraced. Some skills are lost in the process.
Try finding a good watchmaker these days. Their numbers are dwindling
rapidly.

Live will always be live. What can be done with a live-to-tape production
changes as things progress. Taping a show at 8 pm, editing all night, then
airing in the morning was never my idea of fun. NLEs make that easier and
way quicker. Live to server to NLE to server to air is the way to go now,
and will probably change again soon.
