I sounds as if along with the crash, you also lost a needed codec. I
ran into this recently while updating a documentary originallly done in
Premiere 6, to Premiere Pro CS3. I ended up having to install Premiere
6 just so I could then run a utility to install an older Pinnacle
codec. Afterwards, the older AVI's are then fine in the CS3 timeline.

You might try searching the web for an AVI info utility (there are a lot
out there with varying usefulness), and try to identify what your missing.
