All you have to do to get WinMX back is add the "hosts" file patch and
select "make primary connection to network" on the log-in screen (no
matter what type Internet connection speed you have). That works for
Win98 users also. The problem is 99+% of the users have "secondary
connection" as the choice and that won't connect without a software
patch to provide that function now that "WinMX.com" is off line. The
patch posted on "WinMX World" doesn't work with Win98 so I can't
comment on that dll file.
Might also want to update to WinMX 3.54 Beta 4. The patches are
focused on this version although probably OK for v3.3 or better. 3.54
can be found and downloaded from a number of Google search links.
I did this and downloaded files from both WinMX peer and Open Nap
networks this morning. Transfers are a little slower because the
primary connection constantly eats some bandwidth, but it works.
Users that had/have "primary" as their default (pre-9/22/05) are
mostly on corporate or government networks where firewalls prevent the
rest of us from downloading from them. They can get from us, but not
conversely. You always get "connection timed out". That's no
different than it was before. But, we do use their bandwidth for the
speedy searches so they contribute in their own way. Most of the
accessible shared files came from people with slower, secondary
connections to the network. Taking away 99.99% of the available
shared files, you got next to nothing left.
To get WinMX back the way it was, spread the word. We need all the
previous users back on. Use any tools you have .... websites, e-mail,
forums, newsgroups, telephone, ... The mainstream media only spreads
RIAA BS because that's what they get paid to do. It's up to the
people who believe in freedom to overcome the conspiracy. Power to
the People !
