You've hit the nail on the head as that is exactly what is happening. Canon
appear to be well know offenders in this regard. Any audio clock difference
from the expected 48kHz is noticed during import to the NLE hence the audio
drift being noticed on the timeline. The audio can drift perhaps as much as
a frame every couple of minutes and a long capture will almost certainly be
noticeable. Sony camera clocks tend to be more accurate and drift much less
but it is always better to capture shorter sections if possible. Or use
DVCAM of course.

I see to remember this was reported by a FCP engineer who brought it to
public attention a few years ago.
