Larger and heaver are certainly consistent with lower distortion.
The Century is clearly a more "generic" and not optimized for
any particular camera/lens which is quite likely why you see those
anomalies.

I use the Sony VCL-MHG07 on DCR-TRV950 and I like it a lot.
