A $10 mic on your collar will likely perform better than a $1000 mic
that is 10 feet away. Save yourself a lot of money and grief and forget
the "shotgun" solution.
If you want a second opinion, you can go over to the film/video sound
newsgroup news:rec.arts.movies.production.sound and ask them.
They will tell you the same thing. Use a clip-on mic if you don't have
an experienced boom operator. And use a wired mic unless you can
budget at least $500 for a wireless that isn't a plastic toy. (They would
likely say at least $1500 for a non-toy wireless).
